Soft Tissue Grafting

Gum grafting and soft-tissue procedures can strengthen thin tissue, protect exposed roots, and help create a stable, healthy environment around teeth and implants.

What is soft tissue grafting?

Soft tissue grafting (often called a “gum graft”) refers to procedures that add or reposition gum tissue to improve tissue thickness, protect exposed root surfaces, and support long-term periodontal and implant health. The goal is a stable, maintainable gumline that is easier to keep clean and more comfortable.

When it may be recommended

  • Gum recession with sensitivity, exposed roots, or a higher risk of further recession
  • Thin tissue phenotype where added thickness improves stability and comfort
  • Before or after implants to improve tissue quality and help maintain healthy margins
  • Areas that are difficult to clean due to shallow vestibule or limited attached tissue

Common techniques

Technique selection depends on anatomy, goals, and whether the area is around a tooth or an implant. Options may include connective tissue grafting, free gingival grafting, pedicle/flap approaches, or biologic materials when appropriate.

What to expect

  • Evaluation & planning: we assess recession, tissue thickness, and your long-term goals.
  • Anesthesia options: many cases are done with local anesthesia; IV sedation can be used for comfort based on preference and clinical needs.
  • Procedure day: the graft is placed and secured to support predictable healing.
  • Follow-up: we monitor healing and provide customized instructions.

Healing & timing

Most patients notice the tissue “settle in” over the first few weeks. Full maturation takes longer and varies by site and technique. If grafting is part of an implant plan, we coordinate timing with your restorative dentist and overall treatment sequence.

Risks & considerations

As with any procedure, risks include bleeding, infection, discomfort, graft shrinkage, color/texture differences, or incomplete root coverage. We’ll review your specific risk profile and expected outcomes at your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Will it hurt?

Most patients describe mild to moderate soreness for a few days. We provide individualized post-op guidance to support comfort and healing.

How long do results last?

Long-term stability depends on tissue type, oral hygiene, bite forces, and habits. Our goal is to create a healthier, more maintainable gumline and reduce the risk of further recession.

Do I need a graft before implants?

Not always. In some cases, adding tissue thickness can improve cleansability and help maintain healthy margins around implants. We’ll advise based on your anatomy and restorative plan.
