IV sedation monitoring equipment for safe oral surgery in Lombard IL

What is IV sedation?

IV sedation is a technique used to help patients remain deeply relaxed during oral surgery. Medications are administered through an intravenous line and monitored continuously throughout the procedure.

Who is a candidate?

  • Patients with dental anxiety
  • Complex or longer procedures
  • Patients seeking a more comfortable experience

Safety & monitoring

Patient safety is our highest priority. Vital signs are monitored continuously, and sedation plans are tailored to each patient’s medical history.

Before sedation

  • No food or drink for at least 8 hours prior
  • A responsible adult escort is required
  • Review medications with your surgeon

Why these steps matter: Fasting and having a responsible adult escort reduce the risk of nausea/aspiration and help keep you safe while the sedation is still affecting your reflexes and judgment.

After sedation

  • No driving or important decisions for 24 hours
  • Expect temporary drowsiness
  • Follow all postoperative instructions provided

Why the restrictions? Sedation can linger even after you feel “awake.” Avoiding driving, alcohol, and important decisions for 24 hours helps prevent accidents and supports a smooth recovery.

Anesthesia training & credentials

Oral & maxillofacial surgeons are trained in anesthesia during specialty residency and are experienced in providing office-based sedation with continuous monitoring. Your sedation plan is tailored to your medical history and the procedure.

Important: Sedation recommendations are individualized and discussed during consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Am I a candidate for IV sedation?

Many healthy adults and teens are candidates. We review your medical history, medications, airway considerations, and anxiety level to determine the safest plan.

Do I need to fast before sedation?

Yes. Fasting reduces the risk of nausea and aspiration. We’ll provide clear instructions on when to stop eating and drinking before your appointment.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

Yes. You must have a responsible adult escort, and you should not drive, work, or make important decisions for the rest of the day.

Will I be asleep?

IV sedation ranges from moderate to deep sedation depending on your needs. Many patients feel very relaxed and remember little of the procedure, but responses vary.

Is IV sedation safe?

When performed by properly trained clinicians with appropriate monitoring and emergency preparedness, office-based IV sedation is very safe. We tailor medications and monitoring to your health profile.

What side effects are common?

Temporary grogginess, mild nausea, and drowsiness can occur. Most patients feel back to normal by the next day.

Can I take my usual medications?

Sometimes yes, sometimes adjustments are needed. We’ll review your medication list and give personalized instructions—especially for diabetes meds, blood thinners, and certain supplements.
