Implant & Bone Graft Aftercare

Healing guidance after dental implant surgery, bone grafting, and sinus-related procedures.

Implant and bone graft aftercare

Implant and graft sites need time to stabilize and heal. Protecting the area early helps the body build strong bone and healthy gum tissue around the surgical site.

Bleeding and swelling

Light oozing can occur during the first day. Swelling is expected and commonly peaks at 1–3 days.

Amicar mouth rinse (aminocaproic acid): In some cases—especially if you have a pre‑existing bleeding condition or your surgeon recommends additional strategies to reduce bleeding—you may be prescribed a special mouth rinse commonly known as “Amicar.” See Amicar mouth rinse instructions (PDF).

Protecting the graft or implant site

  • Avoid pulling the lip/cheek to “check” the site
  • Avoid hard or crunchy foods that can traumatize the area
  • Do not disturb the site with fingers or tongue

Sinus precautions (when applicable)

If your surgery involved the upper jaw near the sinus (such as a sinus lift), you may be instructed to avoid nose blowing and to sneeze with your mouth open.

Follow-up: Bone graft and many implant-related sutures are commonly removed around 3 weeks at your post-op visit.

Frequently asked questions

How long will swelling last after implant surgery?

Swelling often peaks at 1–3 days and then steadily improves. Mild bruising can be normal.

Is bleeding normal after implants or bone grafting?

Light oozing is common on the first day. Red saliva often looks like more blood than it actually is.

When are graft/implant stitches removed?

Many implant and bone graft sutures are removed around 3 weeks at the post-op visit, though timing may vary.

What should I eat after implant surgery?

Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing directly over the surgical site. Avoid crunchy or hard foods that could disrupt the area.

Do I need sinus precautions?

If your surgery involved the upper posterior jaw or a sinus lift, you may need to avoid nose blowing and sneeze with your mouth open. Follow your specific instructions.

Can I brush the area?

Brush gently and avoid direct trauma to the surgical site. Follow any rinse instructions provided to you.

When can the implant be used or restored?

Most implants require a healing period before they are ready for the final tooth. The timeline depends on bone quality, grafting, and your treatment plan.
